Perhaps more than any other technique, microwaves are unique in their scope, their range of applications, their versatility, and their amazing ability to perform quantitative analysis, quantitative measurements. From a distance of 800 km, microwave instruments can make centimeter-scale measurements of the ground surface, or determine atmospheric concentrations with a precision of a few parts per billion.
